Dropped nicks on the Harbor IRC and Java Chat

Postby mikes » Sat Dec 26, 2009 2:43 pm

The following is a copy of an email that was sent out for the folks who use the Harbor-of-Refuge IRC and Java chat.

Hi folks, back in November, we had a server change, and even though it was an
unannounced and unexpected change made by our service provider, everyone seems to
have found their way in.

It has come to my attention though, that peoples nicks are being dropped. This is no
one's fault, and no one has been removed from the registered nicks list by anyone at
Harbor.

The chatroom software is set up so that after a 30 day period of inactivity by any
member, the nick is automatically dropped. There is no way to change this that I
know of......So...for those who have had their nicks dropped, you need to
re-register. The instructions are the same for anyone who wants to register for the
first time as well.

To register your nick in harbor, type the following command:

/msg nickserv register (your password here) (your email address )

For example, if I wanted to register as "MikeS", and my password was "smileydog" and
my email address was [email protected], I would type in the command like
this:

/msg nickserv register smileydog [email protected]

DO NOT put your nick in the command, DO NOT enter your email address before your
password, and DO NOT put an "e" on the end of "nickserv"...These are common mistakes
and will result in the registration being flawed or not accepted....

Once you have registered, and logged out for the first time, every time you come
back on you will be asked to identify yourself with your password, the command for
that is:

/msg nickserv identify (your password)

So, using the same example names in the registration instructions above, the command would be:

/msg nickserv identify smileydog

Channel OPs- If any ops have been dropped, please email me and let me know so I can
add you to the auto ops list again. If you are having trouble getting your ops
after I add you to the list, and can't get your "perform on connect" scripts to
work, you can manually enter the identify command and you should be set.

All a member or OP has to do is log on at least once every 30 days, and your nick
will stay registered.

I hope that helps.
